What are T5 fluorescent lamps?
This type of TL lighting has a slightly smaller diameter (16mm) than the 'standard' T8 TL tube. Another feature is the size of these fluorescent tubes, because they also differ from the T8 tube. The most common sizes are namely 5 centimetres smaller: 55 cm, 85 cm, 115 cm and 145 cm. A fun fact: the T5 tube was developed later than the other fluorescent tubes and is generally more energy efficient, while also lasting longer. At Lampdirect, you can choose from T5 fluorescent tubes from well-known top brands such as Philips, Osram and Sylvania while stocks last. We also carry T5 secura tubes, which are specially designed for the food sector due to their protective coating, and T5 black light tubes for, among others, discotheques, theatres and bars where such a light effect is shown to its best advantage.
What kind of fitting does a T5 lamp have and how do I recognise it?
Standard T5 lamps have a G5 (TL5) fitting, which consists of two pins at either end of the tube. The fitting owes its name to the fact that these pins are 5 mm apart. The pins also stick out a little more than with the T8 tube. If you go for a round T5 tube, it comes with a 4-pin 2GX13 fitting. And then there is the 4-pin G10q fitting, which applies to some T5 UV-C (ultraviolet) tubes.
Does T5 lighting work with a starter?
No, and that is because when you buy T5 tubes you do not need a starter. And that, in turn, has to do with the type of fixture that this fluorescent lighting is suitable for, namely fixtures that work on an (HF) electronic ballast. This applies to all traditional T5 tubes.
How do I fit a T5 tube into a luminaire?
That is incredibly simple! You place the T5 tube in the fitting via the G5 plug-in fitting on both sides, after which you turn it a quarter turn. In order to check whether the tube is really secure in the fitting, you can lightly pull on it. Has the tube reached the end of its service life and does it need to be replaced? Then use the same method: turn the tube a quarter turn until you can remove the light source from the fitting.
How many fluorescent tubes do I need per square metre?
The strength of the light plays a major role here, as does the lumen count. For workplaces, assume 500 lumens per square meter. So suppose you have an office of 30m², then you need a total of 30x500 = 15000 lumens of fluorescent lighting. In the specifications of each product the number of lumens is mentioned. So you know exactly how many fluorescent tubes you need in total. However, the amount of lumens per room can vary significantly. For example, for corridors 200 lumens per m² is already suitable, while for a supermarket or workplace 700 lumens is desirable. Do you have any questions about this? How do I replace my current T5 tubes with a T5 LED variant?
The switch from T5 to LED T5 is a piece of cake. Start with your current fluorescent tube. How long is it and what is its colour temperature? Once you know this, you can start looking for a suitable LED replacement in our T5 LED assortment. LED T5 lamps of course have the same G5 fitting and fit into your current fixture, so installation is completed in less than a minute! Do you need multiple numbers at once? Then you can save extra money by buying a value pack. Choosing LED means choosing energy savings of over 70%, products with a much longer life span, higher efficiency, lower costs and a contribution to a better environment. Plenty of good reasons to make the switch today.
Are there complete T5 fittings for a ceiling?
Yes, they do exist! You can choose various alternatives if, in addition to the T5 lighting, you also want to replace the luminaire. LED mounting bars and LED light lines are the most popular products. You can also go for LED battens, which you can click together. This comes in handy in places like a kitchen or bathroom. A good example of this is the Noxion Batline Connect.
