Zone lighting
Successful lighting design creates a good interplay of ambient, accent and zone lighting. Basic lighting is used for general lighting, while accent lighting usually has a decorative function and helps to emphasise corners or products. Zone lighting comprises lamps and luminaires that only illuminate a specific area. In this blog article, we take a closer look at the term zone lighting and explain what it is all about.

What is meant by zone lighting?
Zone lighting refers to all luminaires that are used to illuminate specific areas. It can be used as reading or craft lighting, as dining area lighting or to accentuate a specific area in the room.
Zone lighting: between flexibility and individuality!
Zone lighting is more than just light. It is an expression of personal taste, lifestyle and preferences. For example, it is common for bookworms to have a light in addition to the basic lighting, which is only switched on during relaxed reading time. If you are an enthusiastic DIY enthusiast who wants to give free rein to your creativity in the evening but perhaps doesn't want to disturb your flatmates with the ambient light, zone lighting is often used. Families also like to sit together at the dining table in the evening and want lighting that is inviting and does not dazzle.
The special thing about zone lighting is its flexibility. While other light sources have to remain screwed to the wall or ceiling for life, zone lighting provides fixtures that can be positioned flexibly as required.
There is also flexibility in terms of colour temperature and light intensity. The luminaires are available in different light colours and the light intensity can also be adjusted as required.
Dimmable zone lighting
The dimming function of zone lighting helps you to adapt the light colour and light intensity to your needs. Do you want to increase your productivity and concentration and need a suitable light colour for this? Then cool white is the best choice. For a relaxed atmosphere, you can simply switch from cool white to warm white using the dimming function.
Where is zone lighting used?
Zone lighting is suitable for both commercial and private use. It can be used as a desk light in offices and other work areas as well as a light on the bedside table.
The pendant luminaire above the dining table, the lamp on the bedside table, the luminaire in the garden that puts the plants in the right light, or the luminaire at the end of the corridor in a hotel area that creates an inviting and cosy effect. These are all lighting solutions that fall under the term zone lighting.
What should I consider when choosing zone lighting for a work area?
There are a number of regulations for workstations that must also be taken into account for zone lighting. The light sources in work areas such as offices must be flicker-free and have a UGR < 19. The right light colour at the workplace also plays an important role. Cool white (from 4,000 K) promotes productivity and concentration.
How to install zone lighting?
Zone lighting can be installed in different ways depending on the area of application. For table or desk lamps, all you need is a suitable table, preferably near a power socket. The lamp can be placed on it, connected to the power supply and switched on. If the lighting is to be mounted on the ceiling or wall, it is advisable to follow the instructions for use of the light source and use them as a guide.
