Where can LED lights be used?

Thanks to the decreasing prices and the improving technology, the application areas of LEDs are becoming wider. Nowadays LED solutions from manufacturers such as Philips, Osram or Noxion do far more than just the lighting requirements for the private home.

Because LED lighting is efficient and almost maintenance-free, it is ideal wherever light is needed. LED alternatives are available for any traditional light source like halogen or CFL bulbs. Before using a dimmer, make sure that it is compatible with LED products.

Where LED lights are used?

In the past industrial areas often used LEDs as indicator lamps for electronic devices, replacing small incandescent bulbs. Nowadays the use of efficient and ecologic lighting is also needed in the private sector. Therefore applications start from small tail lights for the bicycle up to street lights, display lighting, automotive technology and medicine.

Can I use LED bulbs outside?

Any LED bulb placed outside should be accordingly rated. Most manufacturers specify a temperature range of -20 to +50 degrees for their products, means that their product will perform optimally at this ambient temperature. Coldness does not affect LED that much and even helps with the cooling. The temperature should only be not too hot, because otherwise there is a risk, that the products will get faster defect.

Before you start, always check your fixture if it is also suitable for outdoor use. Usually that means it has a UL (Underwriter’s Laboratory) listing and can handle damp or wet conditions. An IP (Ingress Protection) rating can tell you just how protected your fixture is against water. A rating of IP65 or lower means your fixture is weather resistant, but a rating of IP66 or higher ensures your fixture is essentially waterproof.
