LED reduced CO2 emissions for half billion tonnes in 2017!

There are several reasons why LEDs are better for the environment. It has a longer lifespan, consumes less energy than traditional lighting and therefore promotes the reduction of carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions.

Why reduce CO2 Emissions?

Carbon dioxide (CO2) is naturally occurring gas in the atmosphere (fires, volcanic eruptions, etc.). However, in addition to the natural emissions of this gas, human activity tends to add a surplus of CO2 emissions (heating, vehicles, etc.). This leads to an increase in the so-called ‘greenhouse effect’. What is the greenhouse effect? It is a naturally occurring phenomenon. The latter allows our dear planet to genuinely maintain a certain level of temperature to preserve life. Nevertheless, just as with carbon dioxide, human activity tends to increase this situation.

How does LED lighting help reduce CO2 emissions?

Most of the additional carbon dioxide surplus comes from our electricity consumption. Light emitting diodes use energy more efficiently than halogens or fluorescent lamps. Some LED lighting solutions can save up to 90% energy compared to previous solutions. In addition, they have a lifespan that can be 20 times longer than traditional lighting. All this reduces the overall annual electricity consumption (Kw/h), and thus decrease drastically energy consumption throughout the year, resulting in an overall reduction in carbon dioxide emissions. Investing in LEDs have an even greater impact than return on investment, it is also good for environment.
Furthermore, the manufacturing of LED products is made with 100% recyclable materials. In fact, at the end or their life, LED bulbs will not end up in nature but will be recycled. This is another important factor in reducing their secondary carbon footprint. All of these actions can have a significant impact on the environment as well as on your electricity bill (17% of the electrical use of a home comes from lighting alone).

How much has CO2 emissions been reduced with the use of LED in 2017?

According to a study by IHS Markit, a leading US-based global business information company, the use of LEDs to illuminate buildings and outdoor spaces has reduced CO2 emissions by nearly 570 million tonnes in 2017! We can hope to see this figure improve with the massive installation of LEDs around the world. We have been very involved in improving the carbon footprint. In 2017, we sold to approximately 150.000 companies worldwide. Of these companies, more than 60% bought LED light on our site. Let’s switch to LED!
