The most important information at a glance:

  • Combine daylight and artificial light, direct and indirect light
  • Minimum light output: 500 lx
  • Use gooseneck lamps for your desk
  • The colour temperature should be at least 4,000 K (cool white). It aids alertness and concentration

Which lighting concept is the right one?

A combination of natural daylight and artificial lighting, as well as direct and indirect light, is generally recommended for home office lighting. Ideally, your desk should be placed next to a window. This allows for sufficient daylight and makes it easy to look outside every now and then, which is important for preventing your eyes and your mind from becoming overly tired. It may even help to boost your creativity. Overall, your lighting concept should include general lighting that provides sufficient brightness and a few alternative light sources. LED spotlights bulbs, pendant lights or wall lights are all suitable for general room lighting. If it's bright and sunny outside, you may not need to switch on your general indoor lighting at all. Accent lighting may still have a role to play, however, by providing the perfect productive atmosphere or lighting up a piece of artwork or an ornament that inspires your creativity. A gooseneck lamp can be particularly handy for use on a desk because it's easy to position exactly where you want it. If there's no room on your desk for a gooseneck lamp, one that attaches with a clamp takes up even less space. A lot of desk lamps like this use bulbs with standard caps like E14 or E27.

What properties should your lamps have?

As well as having a combination of different types of lighting that provide sufficient brightness, there are several other specifications that should be taken into consideration when selecting lighting for your home office. Here are some of our recommendations:

Light output

A value of approximately 500 lx is recommended for working in a home office environment. This value corresponds to the European standard DIN EN 12464-1 on indoor lighting in workplaces. To achieve 500 lux at your desk, a lamp that has an output of approximately 1,000 lumens is recommended. You can find out more about the EU standard in our blog article The European Standard EN 12464-1.

Colour temperature and colour rendering

Home office lighting should have a colour temperature of at least 4,000 Kelvin. Cold white light with a high proportion of blue aids alertness and concentration. In the morning in particular, it ensures a successful start to the working day. If there is little natural daylight, you can also use daylight white (6,500K) lighting. Good colour rendering (at least 80 Ra) is also important as this makes it easier to work on a screen.

Unified Glare Rating - UGR <19

Glare is something you don't want because it can be an unpleasant distraction. Be careful when positioning your lights, therefore, to prevent glare on your computer screen. Generally speaking, lights that are positioned above you should avoid any problems with glare. We also recommend choosing lights with a UGR of less than 19, especially when it comes to LED panels. A rating of <19 means you shouldn't have any problems with glare. As well as being distracting, glare can cause stress, fatigue and even headaches. Click here to see all our UGR<19 LED panels.

Flicker-free lighting

It's also important that the lights you choose do not flicker. LED tubes are perfect for replacing fluorescent ones, for instance. Better still, they offer much better energy efficiency and a longer lifespan too.

Beam angles

A beam angle wider than 90° should be used for general lighting, while a beam angle of less than 90° is recommended for accent lighting. The ideal home office lighting setup will include a mixture of both general and accent lighting.

Why LED?

Choosing LED lights for your home office has many advantages. As well as being much more energy efficient and having a significantly longer lifespan, the quality of LED lighting will allow you to focus on your daily tasks without any unwanted distractions. This means you can be every bit as productive in your home office as you are in your normal place of work.
