World Environment Day 2022

Every year, on 5 June, more than 140 countries celebrate World Environment Day. This day was established in 1972 by the United Nations General Assembly and was celebrated for the first time in 1974 with the slogan "Only One Earth". The goal of World Environment Day is to make us reflect and become aware of various environmental issues, including air pollution, marine pollution, overpopulation, global warming, sustainable consumption, health emergencies and threats to fauna.

Theme of this year

World Environment Day is hosted each year in a different city and each year we focus on a theme, with the intention of raising awareness and driving change for the environment. Some of the topics dealt with in recent years concern the protection of the ecosystem and biodiversity, air pollution and plastic pollution.

All of us, in our own small way, can intervene in the protection of our planet. For example, we can reduce the consumption of plastic, choose less polluting means of transport and reduce waste and consumption.

Switch to LED

We can also reduce energy consumption by switching to LED lighting. In addition to guaranteeing energy savings of up to 70%, LED lighting is also much more durable than other lighting sources, which will substantially reduce the frequency with which it is necessary to replace light sources. Furthermore, LEDs do not contain dangerous substances such as mercury and therefore at the end of their long life cycle, they can be almost entirely recycled. Another notable advantage is that LED light sources do not emit UV radiation.

How does Any-Lamp contribute to a better environment?

At Any-Lamp.co.uk, part of World Wide Lighting, we have already planted 6,546 trees! In Portugal, in the region of Freguesia de Tavares, 6,546 trees have already been planted to compensate for our CO2 emissions. As a result, around 1,432 tonnes of carbon will be filtered from the air over the next 40 years. With this forestation, we have also restored 9.12 hectares of land, which is positive for both people and animals. These numbers will only increase in the upcoming years, as we plant trees together with Land Life Company on a yearly basis to offset our carbon footprint of the previous year.
